# Protecting your potted orange tree for winter

26 September 2026 2 min read A well powder-coated wrought iron box holds up outdoors all year round, winter included. The plant it holds doesn’t always: depending on the species, an orange tree or citrus plant may need protection before the first frosts. Here’s what to plan for.

## Drainage, worth checking before the cold season

Poor drainage in winter holds water around the roots, a risk made worse by frost. Check that the drainage holes haven’t clogged up over time, especially after a recent repotting — a simple step, best done before the cold sets in rather than once the problem shows up.

## Mulching, a simple and effective protection

Even for a hardy plant, a thick layer of mulch on the surface protects the roots from sharp temperature swings — a point that matters in particular on a limited volume of soil, such as that of a [small size](https://bac-a-oranger.fr/en/small-size/) , where the roots are more exposed to temperature changes than they would be in open ground.

## Bringing plants indoors, depending on the species

A non-hardy plant should be brought indoors before the first frosts. The box itself doesn’t need shelter — it’s designed to stay outside. This is a distinction worth making clearly: the question isn’t “does the box mind the cold”, but “does the plant it holds mind the cold”.

## And what about the iron itself?

An intact powder coating protects the metal reliably, even through winter. The one point to watch is a scratch on the finish: it exposes the metal, and a quick touch-up prevents rust from taking hold before spring returns — see our article on [choosing a finish](https://bac-a-oranger.fr/en/blog/choosing-a-finish-for-your-orangery-box/) for how powder coating compares with an aged raw finish on this specific point.

## Planning ahead at the time of ordering

If overwintering matters to you — a delicate plant, a windy spot, a coastal location — it’s worth mentioning when you request your quote: handles or rings can make it easier to move the box to shelter, an option to confirm depending on the [size](https://bac-a-oranger.fr/en/blog/small-or-large-size-how-to-choose/) you choose.
